If you’ve ever looked at fertility labs and thought,
“What does any of this even mean?” — you’re not alone.
Let’s break down the ones that actually matter.
AMH (Anti-Müllerian Hormone)
👉 What it tells you: Egg supply (quantity)
- Higher → more eggs remaining
- Lower → fewer eggs remaining
Important:
This does not measure egg quality—just quantity.
FSH (Follicle-Stimulating Hormone)
👉 What it tells you: How hard your body is working to stimulate eggs
- Higher FSH → body working harder → possible lower ovarian reserve
Measured on day 3 of cycle for accuracy.
LH (Luteinizing Hormone)
👉 What it tells you: Ovulation signaling
- LH surge → triggers ovulation
- High LH relative to FSH → may suggest PCOS
Estradiol (E2)
👉 What it tells you: Estrogen levels + ovarian activity
- Helps interpret FSH
- Too high early → may mask ovarian reserve issues
Progesterone
👉 What it tells you: Did you ovulate?
- Checked after ovulation
- Confirms your body is actually releasing an egg
Thyroid (TSH)
👉 What it tells you: Metabolic + hormonal balance
Even mild thyroid issues can:
- Disrupt ovulation
- Affect implantation
A1c / Insulin / Metabolic Labs
👉 What they tell you: Blood sugar + insulin resistance
This is huge for:
- PCOS
- Irregular cycles
- Ovulation issues
Semen Analysis (Do Not Skip This)
👉 What it tells you:
- Sperm count
- Movement
- Shape
This is one of the most important tests and often overlooked.
The Reality About Fertility Labs
Here’s the honest part:
- Labs don’t tell the whole story
- “Normal” doesn’t always mean optimal
- Timing matters (a lot)
Fertility labs are just pieces of the puzzle
What I Focus On
Instead of just checking boxes, I look at:
- Patterns across labs
- Symptoms + cycle history
- Metabolic health
- Real-life goals
Bottom Line
Fertility labs are helpful—but only if you understand what they actually mean.
And more importantly, what to do next.
